How ContextShift works

Save your current tabs as a named workspace with one click. Switch between workspaces instantly — every tab restores exactly where you left it. ContextShift auto-saves a snapshot every 5 minutes so nothing is lost if your browser crashes. Use the global search shortcut to find any tab across all workspaces without leaving the keyboard.

Works on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge

ContextShift uses each browser's built-in tab group API, so workspaces appear as real native tab groups — your tabs look and behave exactly as you expect, no custom UI to learn. Full support for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox 139+. The global search shortcut is ⌘K on Chrome and Edge, Ctrl+Shift+F on Firefox.

A word from the maker

ContextShift started as something I built for myself. Too many tabs, too many projects, no good way to switch between them without losing context. I fixed it, and it turned out other people had the same problem. So here it is.

It does what it says, your data never leaves your device, and there are no recurring fees. The Pro license is $19 once — no subscription, no renewal. It works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. I'll maintain it for as long as I can, and if it ever stops working I'll be honest about that too.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from just using browser tab groups?
Browser tab groups let you colour and label tabs. ContextShift adds saving them so they survive closing, switching between multiple saved setups in one click, auto-snapshots every 5 minutes, search across all your workspaces, and restoring exactly where you were. The tab groups themselves are still your browser's native ones — ContextShift just manages them.
Where is my data stored?
Everything is stored locally in your browser's extension storage — on your device. Nothing is sent to any server. The only outbound call the extension makes is to verify a Pro license key if you enter one.
What happens if my browser crashes?
ContextShift auto-saves a snapshot of all your workspaces every 5 minutes. You can restore any of the last 30 snapshots from the Snapshots view.
Does it sync between devices?
Your workspaces sync across devices on the same browser if you are signed into your browser account (Google on Chrome/Edge, Mozilla on Firefox). Sync does not cross browsers — a workspace saved on Chrome won't appear in Firefox. This is a browser platform limitation, not something we can work around.
How does Firefox support work?
Firefox 139+ has full native tab group support matching Chrome's API. ContextShift uses it. The global search shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+F on Firefox (Ctrl+Shift+K conflicts with Firefox DevTools). Pro license sync on Firefox requires a Mozilla account with Add-ons sync enabled.
